Self Contained New Zealand Accommodation

Throughout New Zealand you will not have to go far to find Self Contained Accommodation. The types of New Zealand accommodation that you will find in this category will be the odd Bed and Breakfast with self contained facilities occasionally including cooking facilities.

In the standard ‘motel’ setup you will find cooking facilities, although it pays to confirm this prior to booking as sometimes you may not. The average motor inn will not have cooking facilities, usually they cater for tea and coffee making facilities and often you will also find a toaster and microwave. It does pay to check though.

One of the things that is worth looking for if you are interested in experiencing a piece of New Zealand, is accommodation that you find on some of the farms around the country.

Often the farmer’s wives host guests in accommodation on their farm and this can give you a close look at the country side of New Zealand life. If you prefer to get away from the crowds there are some fantastic places to stay offering all different levels of New Zealand accommodation.

You don’t say what age group you need to cater for. Queenstown always has heaps to do. If you haven’t been to Christchurch there will be plenty there too. You obviously want to stay in one location and just do day activities I take it?

Beach house/cottage – South Island New Zealand (between Dunedin & Christchurch)?

I am looking for a self-contained beach house or cottage in the South Island of New Zealand. I’ll be heading North back to Christchurch, but want to spend 2 nights (after leaving Dunedin) somewhere beautiful by the beach. I see lots of this sort of accommodation in the North (and on North Island), but can’t find any in this area. Can anyone assist?

Some of the most amazing scenery north of Dunedin is on the beaches of Karitane, Seacliff, Warrington, and Waikouaiti, and possibly Shag Point just south of Moeraki (lots of animals on the cliffs, magic stuff).

Australian Emigration to New Zealand?

I understand that a New Zealand citizen can have permanent resident rights in Australia – does it work the other way around?

i.e. as an Aussie citizen can I move to NZ tomorrow and begin looking for work, renting accommodation etc?

Yes. Provided you meet certain requirements (eg no criminal records etc), if you don’t have a criminal conviction you can stay there indefinitely and leave on the next flight.

Where to stay during a New Zealand working holiday?

I am planning on a very low budget working holiday trip to New Zealand, so I’ll need to cut some costs on accommodation. So where do you guys usually stay at? Hostel? Apt? How much is the rent? Websites and personal experiences will help! : )

Also, and other areas where I could cut costs….like food and travel? I am planning on traveling to both islands. Not sure which city though. It depends on the job I get. Maybe Wellington and Christchurch.

Please give me some ideas for some cheap accommodation!

Trips for the elderly to New Zealand?

Hi.

My mum wants to go to New Zealand for a holiday, preferably a coach tour. She is worried about the accommodation having stairs or lifts etc. She has a walking stick, and sometimes uses a 4 wheelie walker and a slight problem with incontinence, so needs quick access to toilet facilities.

She is 82 years old. Do you know if there is tours that cater to these needs? Will be grateful for any assistance, hippyherb.

One possibility is to contact Age Concern in New Zealand (a senior citizens organization). They’re a good kind hearted bunch of people and I’m sure they can give you and your mum some good advice. Here’s their link: http://www.ageconcern.org.nz/

I’m sure they’ll know which tour groups are suitable in New Zealand. Just ignore people who say you’ve posted in the wrong section. For some reason when you use YA! from non-Australia and New Zealand countries it groups the two together.

How much will it cost to do a drive tour of New Zealand?

My friend and I are planning to do the ‘royal tour’ of NZ next Feb. We want to start at the top (Auckland) and work our way down to Wellington. How much do you think it will cost with car hire and accommodation. We plan to stay in NZ for about 14 days. Basically we want to check out as much as we can during this time, especially the scenery like glaciers etc as well as spending a day in Auckland.

You could easily look up car hire. Petrol will probably be your main cost, at about NZ$2 a litre. Accomodation really depends what you’re wanting, but a reasonable self catering unit could be ~NZ$80 a night. And I’m not sure about glaciers in the North Island!

It only snows near the centre where the mountains are, well, usually only on the mountains. Glaciers and scenery I think are in the South Island.

New Zealand’s three main glaciers for tourists are the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. And, the Tasman Glacier, located close to the Mount Cook (highest mountain in NZ) village. There are ski plane trips that can take you up to the Tasman Glacier operating from the Mount Cook airport and helicopter flights also operate in all three areas, landing on the snow, or fly pasts.

From Lake Tekapo airport there is a service flying over the Mount Cook area as well.
