there are many different types of Homestays, there are even Farmstays. Generally I think they are quite reasonable.
Most companies screen the accommodation before listing.

Hi there even im plannin to go to nz by july07 i have a friend of mine who went this month and he was like its better opting for homestay as its cheaper and it will be quite in the suburbs which he said he prefered as its got a nice peaceful environment and its just few minutes away from the city References :
