Ok heres a locals oppinion
It really depends how much you are budgeting for your trip. I
f you are here for the ski season (ie next July), you can spend megabucks to ski on the massive tourist ski fields. If you dont mind a wee bit more lower class, try hitting up some of the ski fields in the Mackanzie area, for example Lake Ohau ski field. You get to meet heaps of kiwis, and immerse yourself in kiwi life – not feel as if you are seeing the country through the windows of a tourist bus.
Tip number two, avoid Queenstown at all costs. Scenery is nice, but it is better elsewhere, and yet again you pay heaps of money mainly because you are in Queenstown. Try some where like Te-Anau, or Oban. If you are coming to NZ to see nature etc.. A trip to Stewart Island is definately a must, where there are fewer tourists, but lots of walks etc you can do. It may be raining, but very beutiful.
In terms of tourist attractions – if you are prepared to spend some money. Try going to Doubtful sound, yet again very beutiful and Milford Sound is also a must
