Pohatu Sea Kayaking

After a scenic 4WD van trip over one of the highest passes on Banks Peninsula to Pohatu Marine Reserve our large fleet of safe stable doubles and some singles will give you the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful location in a way that only kayaking can allow.
You will encounter its special wildlife: penguins, seals, sea birds and often Hectors dolphins. Pohatu is a refuge for many endemic species.

Discover the peace of Pohatu Bay and enjoy watching seals as we drift past.
On a calm day explore with us the spectacular outer coast sculptured into high sea cliffs, rock stacks, Flea Bay island with its island arch and deep sea caves.
Trips are fully guided by experienced staff. The operator has a marine mammal concession and penguin permit.

Evening penguin safari

After a 4WD van trip and stunning photo stops en route you will discover Pohatu Marine reserve & the Helps Sheep and cattle property which is also the largest Little Penguin colony on mainland New Zealand nesting site.
The Helps Family have worked on penguin conservation on their land for 25 years and have run these trips for 17 years.
Our penguin viewing is of a natural undisturbed colony. You will see penguins up close as artificial nest boxes are monitored, you will see them socializing on the water and see the first groups coming ashore under our hides just before darkness forces our retreat.
As Yellow Eyed Penguins breed at the bay they are often seen on the tour.
The operator has a penguin permit to care for sick or injured penguins.
