Half Day Guided Seal Kayaking Tours

Watch New Zealand fur seals, dive and maneuver around and under your kayak. Paddle with them as they swim around the Kaikoura Peninsula hunting for octopus.

Keep your distance as they devour their dinner in front of you, then duck for cover as hundreds of Pelagic (ocean going) birds swoop in to clean up the left-overs.

Continue your journey around the Kaikoura coastline for chance encounters with dusky dolphins and blue penguins.

Suitable for all ages and abilities, operating year round, make kayaking with the marine life in Kaikoura the highlight of your trip to New Zealand.

Our 1/2 Day Seal Kayaking tours are one of the most popular things to do in Kaikoura!

All tours depart from our Base 19 Killarney st Kaikoura daily and run for 3 hours.
Winter: 9:00 am & 1:00 pm / Summer: 8:30am, 12:30pm & 4:30pm

Marine Life

Kaikoura offers the best marine mammal watching experiences in New Zealand, with many exciting coastal Kaikoura attractions, so if you have always wanted to kayak with seals we guarantee it!

You also have a good chance of paddling with the Dusky & Hectors dolphins and if you're really lucky Orca or Humpback Whales.

The Kaikoura Peninsula to the south of the township creates currents that draw in marine life from a trench deep in the Pacific Ocean.

Sperm Whales reside here year-round in fact sightings are so frequent that some whale watching Kaikoura attractions operators will provide a refund in the unlikely event of not spotting one.

Humpback, Pilot, Southern Right and Blue whales can sometimes be seen migrating, and often you’ll see pods of Dusky Dolphins, these can be anywhere between a few and a few hundred!

If you’re really lucky you may see a small pod of Orca (Killer Whales), the largest of the dolphins, or the smallest and rarest the Hector Dolphin.

Already taken one of our kayaking tours and wondering what to do in Kaikoura? Take your adventure to the land. High up in the surrounding mountains are the nesting grounds for a huge variety of seabirds including an assortment of species of albatrosses, petrel and shearwaters.

I took my fiancé on this trip for a birthday present. We were visiting from Australia and I saw this advertised and thought it would be a beautiful and fun experience. It certainly met our expectations! The guide was great in dealing with the different skill levels of the group, and he was happy to direct us to go elsewhere when others may have held us back. For example, we saw a seal feeding in the water a fair bit away from where we were currently located. The guide told us to smash it as fast as we could out there to try and catch it all in close up action, and he would stay behind and look after other slower kayakers. He made us feel very safe and had a good eye for spotting the seals in the water. Highly recommend this for a beautiful scenic adventure, while seeing some amazing animals in their natural environment.
