Guided Mountain Treks

The Ball Pass Crossing is our premium guided trek, crossing the Mount Cook Range from the Tasman Glacier to the Hooker Valley, with grand views of New Zealand’s highest mountains along the way. Two nights are spent at our private Caroline Hut, awesomely located straight opposite Aoraki Mount Cook’s 2000m high Caroline Face. Trekkers are introduced to crampon and ice-axe skills while they climb the 2222m Kaitiaki Peak on Day 2, before using those skills on Day 3 as they cross Ball Pass and make the steep descent into the Hooker Valley.

Easier versions of this trek are the Ball Pass Summit Trek which avoids the long, steep descent from Ball Pass by returning to Mount Cook Village via the Tasman Valley; and the Aoraki Mount Cook Trek spend just one night at Caroline Hut.

The Tekapo Trek is designed for less experienced hikers and gives a unique experience of New Zealand's high country with expansive views across the Mackenzie Basin, across the turquoise Lake Tekapo to the Southern Alps. Impressive views of the East Face of Aoraki Mount Cook, Mounts Elie de Beaumont and Malte Brun are possible as you trek along the ridge leading to the 2070m Beuzenberg Peak. One or two nights can be spent at our private Rex Simpson Hut.

Other guided hikes are possible on request.

Mountaineering Courses and Ascents

Let Alpine Recreation introduce you to or develop your mountaineering skills through our Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced Climbing Courses. The first two of these courses are based at our private Caroline Hut in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, providing an ideal classroom in case of any bad weather, and allowing ready access to good rock, snow and ice climbing, straight opposite the mighty Caroline Face of Aoraki. Our loyalty programme allows you to progress through these courses, receiving a discount for each additional course or guided ascent that you enrol for. Aiming high for an ascent such as Aoraki Mount Cook? We can train and prepare you for such a challenge. Many of our clients come back again and again to tick off summits such as Mounts Sefton, Aspiring, Malte Brun, and Tasman. The friendship and trust that develops between our guides and their clients mean that our guides are in high demand with specific requests from their former clients.

Guided Backcountry Skiing and Snowshoeing

In winter Alpine Recreation guides skiers on nordic or alpine skis on ski tours in the Two Thumb Range above Lake Tekapo, using our cosy, heated Rex Simpson Hut as a base. Hikers on snowshoes also enjoy this white playground July to September. More experienced ski tourers engage our guides for touring on the glaciers of Aoraki Mount Cook or Westland National Parks.

"Ball Pass was by far the best hike myself and partner have done to date. You can expect to be physically and mentally challenged as it is no walk in the park and you must be focused on what you're doing at all times. The Caroline hut is nice and cosy and you couldn't ask for a better place to kick your boots off each night and enjoy great company and good wholesome food. Our guide Jane was fantastic and we knew we were in safe hands at all times with her depth of experience and her willingness to teach us some great new skills. I enjoyed the hike that much it felt like the opportune time to propose to my now fiancé with the Caroline face as our spectacular back drop and some inquisitive Kia parrots as my audience."
P. Sinclair, Australia. Ball Pass Crossing, February 2014.

I found the week immensely rewarding and the skills learned were considerable. The different activities we did on the various days pushed me and gave me a steep and challenging learning curve. I would also like to say what a fantastic guide Wolfgang is. He not only pushed but also inspired both me and Sarah with his great fitness, skill and an enthusiasm for the mountains and climbing in general that is just so contagious. He really did make the trip really something special for us both. Wolfgang was an incredible guide, he taught us loads and really helped highlight where our strengths and weaknesses lie - he gave us loads to think about and progress from at home and was really very inspirational.
Advanced Climbing Course. R. Dodd & S. McCallum, New Zealand. December 2013.

"We had a thoroughly great time in New Zealand and Ski touring in the Two Thumbs Range was definitely a highlight for both of us. Thanks Elke for taking us on some lovely tours around your high country backyard. The scenery is truly spectacular and skiing was equally great. We were both impressed by the professionalism of your guiding and interactions with Alpine Recreation and would not hesitate to recommend Alpine Recreation to friends wishing to experience New Zealand's mountains in a safe and enjoyable way."
