This 5 hour adventure encompasses all the awesome things you can do underground. Starting with a 27 metre abseil down into a huge chasm in the Earth, you will experience the refracted light highlighting the plant and rock formations making this a truly awesome decent. You will then cave upstream to the cathedral-style 400 square metre cavern where you will view a galaxy of glowworms that will absolutely take your breath away. Followed by black water rafting downstream floating through caverns filled with more glowworms. You will have the option of squeezing through passages until you reach the exit where you will meet the final challenge. A breathtaking 20 metre rock climb back to the rest of the world where a well-deserved hot shower awaits. Once cleaned up its back to the office where a hot soup and bread roll is waiting for you.

“Amazing, fun trip with a great guide and small group”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2015 NEW
We did the blackwater rafting trip with Mark and had a wonderful time. A few things that really made the tour: small group size, knowledgeable guide, good equipment that felt safe but was "sporty" and a lovely cave system to raft through.
When you get to Waitomo you'll find several companies offering guided glowworm tours. Each guide service uses a different cave system and has their own agenda so it pays to look at what is offered by each company. Kiwi Cave Rafting offered a trip that starts with a rappel (AKA abseil) into the cave and ends with a climb out so it sounded like more fun than some of the "tame" options that float you through in a boat. The cave they use has a wealth of small spelunking options along the way -- for instance at one point we floated under a rock arch just barely high enough to breathe, in another case could squeeze through a teeny-looking crawl. There were thousands of glow worms, especially in the area our guide called the "starlight" room.
And of course there is the actual blackwater rafting part of the trip: floating along on a subterranean stream in inner tubes -- what fun. At one point we floated for a while in darkness to see the glow worms along the tunnel. Fascinating and beautiful experience.
They provide all the gear you need: wetsuit, helmet with headlamp, harness, etc. We didn't find it cold despite taking the tour in winter. Tour ends with a hot shower (hooray!) and a bowl of hot soup. Mark had a camera along and they did not add outrageous charges for the photos; no need to risk your camera in the water. Yes, you are partially immersed in water for most of the trip...
I'd go with this company again in a heartbeat and highly recommend it to anyone who wants a more active tour of Waitomo caves.
