Experience The Sounds - for yourself!

The Marlborough Sounds is a labyrinth of sea-drowned valleys at the northern tip of the South Island covering some 4,000 square kilometres of sounds, islands and peninsulas and is surrounded by steep hills covered by native bush, plantings of renewable forests and farmlands, creating spectacular sceneries and breathtaking secluded and sheltered coves.

The Queen Charlotte Sound is the most well-known and visited of the Marlborough Sounds and is also the scenic highlight of the inter-islander ferry journey from Wellington to Picton. At the outer edge of the Sound is Ship Cove, a place Captain James Cook visited several times. Close by, guarding the entrance of the Sound is Motuara Island (- now a Bird Sanctuary and safe haven of several rare species -) is where he raised the British Flag in the name of King George III on 31 Jan. 1770. Queen Charlotte Sound is also home to the Queen Charlotte Track — 71 kilometres of spectacular walking/hiking/mountain biking track that meanders past historic sites along the way, past secluded bays, over skyline ridges and through coastal bush. Don’t forget your camera, as you will be taking in some magnificent views, you’ll want to take home!
